In mid 2001 a friend and long time supporter of the Alliance, Michael Joyner, brought a unique special event idea to the then Director of Development Justin Leach. The event: Gay Bingo a wildly successful event in Philadelphia and Seattle!

Mary K Mart – a spectacular and beloved local performer - agreed to host the event. Mary K Mart was well-known for her popular show featuring “Mary K Mart and her Trailer Park Beauties.” Mary began to transform her cast of characters into BVDs – Bingo Verifying Divas – Chocolate Shakes, Winnie Baygo, Mini Mart, Betty Ford, Cruella, Miss Skittles, Roxy, Ho-She Man, and Yoko Homo were ready to play bingo.

John Paul Womble agreed to chair the AAS-C DRAG BINGO committee including: Randy Light (Mary K Mart), Loretta Adams, Gene Schrecengost, Ginny Satterfield, Gaston Williams, Tania Boardman, Stephen Jackson, Adrianne Wilson, Wes Wilson and AAS-C staff person , Bill Seagroves.

The Capital Corral, Von Kekel Salon and The Independent graciously signed on as founding sponsors to underwrite all the costs of the first year thus making it possible for all proceeds to go directly to the Alliance.

With that, DRAG BINGO was born!

Everything now in place, DRAG BINGO debuted in the Triangle in May of 2002. Over 250 people attended the first event held in Raleigh at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Wade Avenue. In less than three months the event outgrew the Raleigh location and moved to Durham in 2003 to a larger space at the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Garrett Road.  The event moved to the Armory in downtown Durham in January 2004, a space able to seat in excess of 500 people.  The event continues to accommodate sell out crowds in excess of 400 people.

Still in its first year DRAG BINGO has raised in excess of $100,000 in support of the Alliance of AIDS Services- Carolina.

Thank you! None of the fun or the impact would be possible without any one of the players. Performers, volunteers, prize donors, contributors and players make

DRAG BINGO a success!

You can too!
